Description:
The Jesuit Refugee Services is an international Catholic organisation with the mission to accompany serve and plead the cause of refugees and forcibly displaced people. Set up by the Society of Jesus in 1980, and now works over 50 countries, the priority of JRS is to accompany refugees whose needs are more urgent or forgotten. The mission of JRS embraces all persons who are driven from their homes by conflict, humanitarian disaster or violation of human rights, following Catholic social teaching which applies the expression de facto refugee to many categories of people.
Objective:
The overall objective of JRS is intimately connected with the mission of the Society of Jesus, namely to serve faith and promote the justice of God’s Kingdom, in dialogue with cultures and religions. “The Society cares for those persons who are totally neglected or inadequately attended to. This is the basic reason why the Society was founded; this is its power; this is what makes it distinctive in the Church”. Its aim is to build by all means of every human endeavour, a fuller expression of justice and charity into the structures of human life in common. Other objectives include providing services in provinces where refugees come from and where they seek protection and first refuge, assisting JRS’ provinces initiate and develop its work in collaboration with other Church and secular organisations, voluntary and governmental which are active in the same field; facilitating the involvement of individuals and communities, promote regional and global cooperation and networking on behalf of refugees and; serving as companions and acting as advocates for refugees’ cause in an uncaring world.
Comments:
The major programme of JRS in Malawi is education where it works in Dzaleka camp as the implementing partner of UNHCR in the camp. Plans are to hire more teachers and to construct a new school block consisting of two classrooms and two latrines. So far 989 elementary level school pupils have enrolled, 20 part time teachers involved, three formation sessions were organised for the teachers, 24 students assisted to attend private secondary schools outside the camp, and nutrition health classes offered to women and girls.
